There is nothing better than natural teeth – that’s why at The Top, we do everything possible to save even the most hopeless teeth without extraction. But sometimes, even with tremendous effort, there are teeth that cannot be preserved in the mouth.

With age and various complications, some people may lose one or more teeth. This affects the patient’s aesthetics and comfort. Chewing function is impaired, and accordingly, the temporomandibular joint undergoes unpleasant changes.

Timely Response

After an extraction, it is important for the patient to seek dental care as soon as possible. It is a fact that teeth move – for example, when a tooth is removed, the neighboring teeth and antagonists (the teeth in the opposite jaw) begin to shift toward the space of the missing tooth.

Solution to the Problem

The extracted tooth can be restored in several ways – one of them is a bridge. There are several types of bridges – conventional bridges, Maryland bridges, implant-supported bridges, cantilever bridges, and more. They can also be made from different materials – zirconia, metal-ceramic, metal, gold, and others.

What is important to know?

Conventional Bridge

A conventional bridge consists of crowns cemented onto the teeth adjacent to the gap (abutment teeth). The missing tooth is replaced with a crown (the bridge pontic). It is important that the teeth adjacent to the gap (the abutment teeth) are in good condition to bear the load of the bridge pontic. In our clinic, we use highly aesthetic materials – ceramic and metal-ceramic – depending on the case. They restore both function and aesthetics, making the bridge indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Maryland Bridges

Maryland bridges and cantilever bridges can only be used in certain cases. A Maryland bridge consists of a crown that restores the missing tooth – the bridge pontic – and partial crowns that are cemented onto the adjacent teeth. In a cantilever bridge, the abutment teeth are only on one side of the gap. Our prosthodontists, after careful analysis, will determine the most suitable option for restoring your missing tooth or teeth in your specific case.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

Usually, several visits are required to complete and cement the dental bridge. During the first visit, the teeth adjacent to the gap are prepared (filed down) for crowns. An impression can be taken the same day – either with conventional impression materials or by digital scanning. A temporary bridge is made. Several fittings are necessary to ensure the bridge becomes a perfect part of your smile.
