Wisdom tooth extraction

The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to appear in the human dentition. They usually erupt between the ages of 16 and 21, but can also emerge later. There are cases where they remain trapped in the bone (impacted wisdom teeth).

It is possible for wisdom teeth to erupt in a normal position, but they can also be tilted, horizontal, or even inverted. These positional anomalies may cause discomfort and even damage to adjacent teeth. In some cases, wisdom tooth buds are absent, which is normal and part of human evolution.

Through a panoramic or 3D X-ray, we can see the position of your wisdom teeth and determine whether their extraction is necessary.

What is the process?

The need for wisdom tooth extraction

Our rule is that if the wisdom teeth do not cause problems, their extraction is not necessary. However, sometimes they can affect the surface of the neighboring tooth, causing cavities, forming periodontal pockets, or creating orthodontic problems. They can cause swelling or even abscesses, as well as affect the overall health of the patient. In such cases, it is best to have them removed.

Extraction of wisdom teeth

The removal of wisdom teeth is performed under local anesthesia by our oral surgeons. It can also be done with IV sedation. If the wisdom teeth have fully erupted, surgery is not necessary. The surgeon luxates them using an instrument called an elevator and then pulls them out with wisdom tooth forceps.

Deep wisdom teeth

If the wisdom teeth are located deep within the jaw, a flap is created — a part of the gum is cut to expose the wisdom tooth, which is then removed. Sometimes, the wisdom tooth needs to be sectioned (cut) to come out more easily and to minimize the size of the wound.

Follow-up care

Painkillers are prescribed, and depending on the doctor's assessment, an antibiotics may also be prescribed. The patient returns for a follow-up check-up the next day. Sutures are usually removed 7 to 10 days after the extraction.
