Humans change their dentition. The primary, milk, baby or temporary teeth start erupting around 6 months. Usually all of them have erupted by the age of 3 years. From 3 to 6 years we are talking about a period of stable temporary dentition. Then, by the age of 6 years, the permanent teeth start erupting, resulting in mixed dentition.
When permanent teeth start to appear in the mouth, they are still not as mineralized as an adult’s ones. This process of full mineralization takes around 2 years. During this time, decays can easily develop. Regular dental check-ups have to be made. Usually, parents do not notice the first molars that erupt in their child’s mouth, since they are situated in the end of the tooth arch. It is also hard to children to brush them right. They become even more vulnerable to developing decays because the plaque on them is not removed.

When the permanent molars have erupted, a good decision is a sealant to be put in their fissures. Fissures are the grooves on your teeth, which are a typical place for food retention and decay development. The sealant is a fluid material, which is put on the fissures and then is light cured.

This way, it creates a smooth surface, so that the fissures of the molar are protected from caries development. The procedure is completely painless. Sealants have been proven to reduce caries risk by 80%. They can last from 5 to 10 years.
